Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec "In the Salon at Rue Des Moulins"

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec Salon at the Rue des Moulins
Toulouse-Lautrec painted of circuses, race tracks, and night clubs, I believe this is why he chose another place that people were at; a salon.  I believe his audience could be men looking for women or where they might be, or women looking for a new style or haircut.  The genre of this is an oil painting. I find this painting the least appalling out of all of them.  The way he paints women and with very little clothing bothers me.  There is not too much to analyze but it does show the girl with her leg up like she is a bit innocent and maybe open to men because on her right leg you can see the end of her stocking.  Also the women in the background blend in and don't really stand out at first but then you see that the girl on the right has her strap down some and the other women's shirt is very low. They all seem to have the same hair color though. The women that is cut off on the right seems to have very little clothing on.  This painting seems like its not a salon I am thinking of where you go to get a hair cut but where you go for men or a strip club.  If the woman is leaving and she is dressed like that then this is definitely not your typical "salon."

  1. cool painting. I like the way the artist used a monochromatic back ground, all red, to highlight the main subject matter of the painting. It draws the viewrs eye to the women and makes them seem as though they are the most important objects in the room. Slight objectifying to women though.

  2. toulouse-latrec was an amazing artist. his work is always riveting and thought-provoking. i don't agree that there is "not too much to analyze" though, because there is quite a bit here that can be evaluated. the colors, the women, the way they are positioned, their facial expressions, the clothing they have on, and the decor of the salon. also, you can address the rhetorical situations of the painting...
